HBO is making it easier for viewers in China to access its content online. Legally.
The network announced Tuesday it had struck a deal with Tencent Holdings Limited, a leading online video platform in China, that would make HBO movies and TV shows — including Game of Thrones, True Detective, The Newsroom and more — available for streaming in China.

'This partnership with Tencent Video ensures that Chinese fans will now be able to enjoy our dramas at the high level of quality they were meant to be experienced,' HBO programming sales president Charles Schreger said. 'This is a great partnership for both companies and for the Chinese consumer as well.'
It's unclear, however, exactly what the demand will be.
For one, Chinese censors have already proven to be problematic for one HBO show.
Earlier this year, Chinese broadcaster CCTV began airing a heavily edited version of Game of Thrones, whose heavy doses of sex and violence are often the topic du jour stateside the day after new episodes air. The cleaned-up version drew much criticism from Chinese viewers who had pirated the uncensored versions since the show first began airing in the U.S. and had a point of comparison.
It is not clear how heavily Tencent Holdings' version of HBO shows will be edited, but with a stricter screening process for TV shows in the U.S. about to take effect, the chances for an improved situation are slim.

That said, the deal clearly mark HBO's attempt to make their content available legitimately and present a legal option for possible viewers. In bringing a China-based partner with a stake in doing so, it has made an ally in their fight against piracy in the country, where the so-called 'Great Firewall' already blocks access to a number of U.S.-based websites, like Facebook and Twitter.

Chinese authorities are making moves to quell piracy, as well. In the past week, two of the country's most notable pirated video sites, which billed themselves as subtitle providers, shuttered operations after receiving pressure from the government, according to a report from the South China Morning Post.
